About The Trip
Let the Chattahoochee lead you into the world Allen Levi evokes in his beloved Theo of Golden — a world of river light, historic streets, artistic discovery and stories rooted deeply in place.

During this rare two-night escape, make your home at Columbus’ beautifully restored Illges Woodruff Estate. Choose the Illges Woodruff House, circa 1850, the J.P. Illges Woodruff House, circa 1911, or reserve both residences for a larger group.

Reunited in 2024, these neighboring historic homes provide a remarkable setting from which to experience Columbus. From here, follow Theo’s sense of place through the people, landscapes and stories that give the city its distinctive character — exploring its art, architecture, cuisine, history and, of course, the Chattahoochee River.

DAY ONE — Welcome to Columbus
Your trip begins at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, where your private Sprinter van will be waiting. Settle in, relax and enjoy the approximately 1½-hour drive to Columbus, Georgia, as your weekend on the Chattahoochee begins. Note: This transfer can be arranged, but is not included

Upon arrival, settle into your historic home and take time to explore the gardens and surroundings.

Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a private guided tour through Historic Linwood Cemetery and the new Heritage Park, discovering Columbus’ fascinating history and its deep connection to the Chattahoochee River.

Your First Evening in Columbus
Dine in a private room at the beautifully restored historic Goetchius House, directly on the Chattahoochee River. Enjoy drinks on the balcony as the sun sets across the river, followed by a gourmet dinner prepared by its renowned chef.

DAY TWO — Theo of Golden, Art & the River
Wake to a beautiful breakfast spread featuring local delights, prepared for you to enjoy with coffee on the gracious front porch of the J.P. Illges Woodruff House, in the gardens or in the Conservatory.

Then set out on your special Theo of Golden sightseeing experience, discovering the people, places and stories that give the book its wonderful sense of place.

Your first stop is the studio of artist Garry Pound, whose work is characterized by Asher in Theo of Golden. See his work and take the opportunity to have Garry create your very own portrait.

From there, stroll to Fountain City Coffee for a cup of its famous coffee. Enjoy the welcoming clientele and the walls adorned with Garry’s portraits.

Continue next door to the bookstore, then sit a spell at the fountain where Theo met so many of the locals.

For lunch, visit the rooftop at Hotel Indigo, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the river flowing below.

After lunch, continue along the Chattahoochee Riverwalk with a private walking tour led by local conservationist and historian Ken Henson. He will share the history, ecology and stories of the river and its role in shaping the city of Columbus.

Return home for an intimate and elegant dinner at the J.P. Illges Woodruff House or in the glass Conservatory.

DAY THREE — The Chattahoochee & Columbus History
Begin your final morning on the water with a private Chattahoochee River excursion with the Lower Chattahoochee Riverkeepers.

Then drive through the brick streets of Columbus’ Historic District on the way to the National Civil War Naval Museum, where you’ll discover another fascinating chapter of the city’s history — including the excitement of a Civil War cannon firing demonstration.

Before departing, you may choose from arranged guided tours or explore some of the city’s other treasures:
  ●  The Columbus Museum  ●  National Infantry Museum  ●  Springer Opera House  ●  Illges Doll House / Historic Columbus Foundation tour  ●  Columbus Botanical Gardens

At the conclusion of your stay, your private Sprinter van will return you comfortably to Atlanta. This transfer will be arranged for you, but is not included.

A Weekend You Can’t Experience Anywhere Else
This intimate Columbus experience brings together the world of Theo of Golden, the Chattahoochee River, art, history, wonderful food and the people who give the city its character.
For two unforgettable nights, you won’t simply visit Columbus — you’ll become part of its story.
