Travel Tips

A few things we share with every client before they go. Little details make a big difference to how a trip feels.

Our Most Important Tip: Leave Room to Breathe

Don’t overschedule your days. We all need time to absorb the new sights, tastes and experiences around us, because that’s how they become lasting memories. A rushed trip leaves only a blurry whirlwind and exhaustion.

Give yourself unhurried mornings, a long lunch, an afternoon with nothing planned. Some of the best moments of a journey happen in the spaces in between.

Before You Go

  • Check your passport today. Many countries require it to be valid for at least six months after you return, with two blank pages. Renewals can take weeks, so don’t leave it to the last minute.
  • Entry authorizations for the UK and Europe. Travelers who don’t need a visa still have to apply online before visiting many countries.
    • The United Kingdom requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you fly.
    • Europe is introducing a similar authorization called ETIAS, along with a new digital border check at arrival.
    • Requirements change often, so always confirm the latest rules on the official sites: UK ETA (GOV.UK) and Travel to Europe (official EU site).
    • When you book with Valise, we’ll tell you exactly what your trip requires and when to apply.
  • Travel insurance. We strongly recommend it for every trip. Buying it soon after you book often gives you the best coverage.
  • Make copies. Keep a photo of your passport, insurance card and itinerary on your phone, plus a paper copy separate from the originals.
  • Enroll in STEP. U.S. citizens can register a trip with the State Department’s free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive safety updates for their destination.
  • Speed up the airport. Global Entry or TSA PreCheck can make your departure and return much smoother.

Packing Well

  • Pack lighter than you think. Many of our journeys include trains, boats and charming hotels with narrow staircases. One suitcase and a carry-on is ideal.
  • Keep the essentials with you. Put medications, a change of clothes, chargers and travel documents in your carry-on, never in checked luggage.
  • Layers over bulk. Even warm destinations can be cool in the mornings, on the water or in the mountains.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Cobblestones, markets and temple steps are part of the fun.
  • Dress with respect. Many churches, temples and mosques ask that shoulders and knees be covered. A light scarf solves most of it.

Money & Staying Connected

  • Use a card with no foreign transaction fees, and carry a small amount of local currency for tips, taxis and markets.
  • Stay connected easily. An international plan or an eSIM keeps your phone working abroad without surprise charges.
  • Tipping customs vary widely. We include a simple tipping guide in your travel documents, so you never have to guess.

Arriving Rested

  • Ease into a new time zone. Get outside in daylight, stay up until a local bedtime and drink plenty of water.
  • Make day one light and fun. We like to plan an easy introductory tour on your first day. It might be a relaxed walk with a local guide, or a ride through the streets by Vespa or tuk-tuk. It’s engaging enough to keep you awake and get your bearings, without wearing you out before the adventure really begins.
